Add Free Live Chat to Framer
Learn how to install a free live chat widget on your Framer site in five minutes. Includes the exact code placement and common setup errors.
The short version
- →Paste the script into the Project Settings under the Custom Code section.
- →The widget only appears on the published site, not inside the Framer canvas.
- →LastWorker chat is free forever with no limits on teammates or conversations.
- →AI is turned off by default to ensure a human always handles the first response.
To add free live chat to Framer, open Project Settings, go to General, and scroll to the Custom Code section. Paste your widget script into the End of body tag box. After you publish the site, the chat widget will appear. It will not show up inside the Framer canvas or the designer during the design process.
How do I install the chat widget on Framer?
I have spent eighteen years managing front desks and service operations. I know that when you are ready to fix a problem, you want it done before the next phone call rings. If you have your Framer project open, you can have this live in about five minutes.
First, you need to open your Project Settings. Within that menu, click on General. You will need to scroll down until you see a section labeled Custom Code. This is where Framer allows you to add external scripts that change how your site functions.
You will see two main boxes for code: the head tag and the body tag. You want the one labeled End of body tag. Paste your specific script into that box. It should look like this:
<script src="https://lastworker.com/widget.js" data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>
Once the code is in the box, save your changes. The final step is to click the Publish button at the top right of your Framer interface. If you do not publish the site, the code stays in the settings and never reaches your visitors.
Why can I not see the widget in my Framer canvas?
I have watched people waste hours refreshing their design editor because they think the code is broken. There is one specific gotcha that every guide should mention: custom code does not run inside the Framer canvas.
When you are designing your layout or moving buttons around, Framer disables scripts to keep the editor fast. You will not see the chat bubble in the bottom corner of your screen while you are working. You will not see it in the preview mode either.
To verify that it works, you must open the actual URL of your published site. I usually keep a second tab open with the live website. Every time I hit publish, I refresh that second tab. If you see the bubble there, you are successful.
How many teammates can I add to the chat for free?
In my time running a regional dental practice with eleven front desks, the biggest headache was the per-seat fee. Most software companies want to charge you for every person who has a login. If I wanted every receptionist to be able to answer a patient question, I had to pay for eleven separate licenses.
We do not do that here. Live chat and email support are free forever for unlimited teammates. You can add your entire staff to the shared inbox. You can have unlimited conversations without hitting a wall or a prompt to upgrade your plan.
I looked at twelve different tools in this market to see how they handle free tiers. Only eight of them even offer a free plan. Out of those eight, most have very tight limits. For example, Crisp limits you to two seats. Freshdesk also limits you to two agents on their free tier. If you have a team of five, you are already forced into a paid plan that costs $19 or $25 per month for every single person.
With this setup, you can have fifty people in the inbox if you need them. There is no credit card required to start and no per-seat fee to worry about as you grow your business.
Is there a limit on how many chats I can have?
I have managed a two-location restaurant group where a Friday night could bring in dozens of questions about reservations or allergies. Some "free" tools are not actually free when you get busy.
Tidio offers a free tier, but they stop your widget after 50 conversations in a month. If you are a service business, 50 conversations might happen in the first three days. Once you hit that limit, the widget simply disappears from your site until the next billing cycle starts.
LastWorker provides unlimited conversations on the free tier. We also include the shared inbox, contact management, tickets, and a public help center for free. You get the knowledge base and saved replies too. I used to write phone scripts at 2am because I was tired of hearing my staff struggle with the same three questions. Having a free knowledge base and saved replies means you can document those answers once and let your team use them forever.
How does the AI work if I decide to use it?
I am a skeptic when it comes to automation. I have seen too many good leads die in a voicemail box because an automated system was too confusing. That is why AI is off by default here.
When you install this on Framer, every channel is manual. A human answers the chat. Nothing is generated by a machine unless you choose to turn that feature on. If you do decide to use the AI to help answer chats, emails, or SMS, we do not charge a monthly subscription for it.
You pay $0.04 only when the AI actually generates a reply. It is a pay-as-you-go model. If the AI answers ten questions for you while you are busy under a car or in a meeting, it costs you forty cents. If it does nothing, it costs nothing.
This is different from most other tools. Many competitors lock their AI behind a high monthly tier. Intercom and Zendesk do not even offer a free tier. To get their full suite, you are often looking at $29 to $55 per agent every month. For a small business, that is a huge bill to pay before you even know if the tool works for you.
Can I use this for phone calls too?
While the chat widget on your Framer site is a great way to catch people who are browsing, many customers still want to pick up the phone. In the shops I worked with, the phone was the lifeblood of the business.
You can get a phone number through us for $1 per month. There is no subscription fee beyond that. If you want the AI to answer a phone call, it costs $0.01 per minute. That price includes the carrier costs.
If you want to send an outbound SMS, it is $0.03 per segment. Inbound SMS messages are free. I like this because it lets a solo operator or a small team look much larger than they are without the overhead of a traditional answering service. An answering service often costs hundreds of dollars a month just to sit there. Here, you only pay for the minutes you actually use.
What is included in the free tier?
It is worth being specific about what you get without paying a dime. I hate when a company says "free" and then hides the basic features behind a login.
The free tier includes the live chat widget you just installed on Framer. It includes an email ticketing system. You get the shared inbox so your whole team can see what is happening. You get the contact list to keep track of your customers. You get the tickets, the knowledge base for your articles, and the saved replies.
Out of the twelve tools I compared, Zoho Desk offers a free tier for three users, but it has no live chat at all. It is email ticketing only. Help Scout is generous on seats with five, but they limit you to one single inbox.
We do not limit those core features. We make our money when you use the advanced AI features or the phone system. If you just want a solid, professional chat widget on your Framer site so you can talk to your customers, it costs you zero.
How do I know if this is right for my business?
I have worked in the trenches of service businesses for nearly two decades. I know that every dollar matters. I also know that a missed message is a missed job.
If you are building a site on Framer, you likely care about how things look and how they function. This widget is designed to stay out of the way until a customer needs help. Because there is no "powered by" badge like you find on Tawk.to, your site keeps its professional look.
You can set this up today, test it with your team, and see how it handles your volume. Since there is no credit card required and no subscription, you are not trapped. You can focus on answering the person who is asking about your pricing or your availability, which is the only thing that actually grows the business.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I paste the chat widget code in Framer?
You paste the script into the End of body tag section. This is found by going to Project Settings, then General, and scrolling down to the Custom Code area.
Why is my chat widget not showing up in the Framer editor?
Framer does not run custom code inside the design canvas or the editor. You must publish your site and view the live URL to see the chat widget in action.
Is the live chat really free?
Yes. Live chat and email support are free forever. This includes unlimited conversations and unlimited teammates without requiring a credit card to start.
Jerry Holt has spent eighteen years running customer operations for service businesses, from a two-location restaurant group to a regional dental practice with eleven front desks. He has hired receptionists, written phone scripts at 2 a.m., and watched good leads die in a voicemail box. These days he writes about what actually moves the needle on the phones, in the inbox, and over chat, and where AI earns its place versus where it gets in the way.
Stop letting customers go to voicemail.
Set up in about fifteen minutes. Live chat and email are free forever, so there is no bill to weigh up before you try it.
