Live chat is a small window on your website that lets visitors send instant messages to your team. At LastWorker, this tool is free forever with no limits on how many people use it or how many messages you send. You install it by adding one script tag to your site code. It works on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, and other major platforms.

I spent eighteen years running operations for service businesses. I managed a restaurant group with two locations and a regional dental practice that had eleven front desks. In those roles, I learned that a lead is a fragile thing. If someone visits your site and has a question, they want an answer right then. If they have to wait for an email reply or leave a voicemail, they often move on to the next business in the search results.

I have watched good leads die in a voicemail box. I have spent 2am writing phone scripts for receptionists, trying to make sure we did not miss an opportunity. Live chat is the best way I have found to capture those people before they leave.

How do you install the chat widget?

You do not need to be a developer to get this running. When you open a LastWorker account, you get a single line of code. This is a script tag. You copy that tag and paste it into the header or footer of your website.

If you use WordPress, you can use a header and footer plugin to drop the code in. If you use Shopify, you paste it into your theme liquid file. I have set this up on Squarespace and Wix for friends in the service industry, and it takes about five minutes. It also works with more technical setups like React, Next.js, Framer, Bubble, and Webflow.

Once the script is on the page, the chat bubble appears. You do not have to touch the code again. Any changes you make to the colors or the greeting in your LastWorker dashboard will show up on your site automatically.

What does it cost to use live chat?

The live chat widget is free. This is not a trial that expires after fourteen days. I have seen many software companies offer a free version that is so limited you cannot actually use it to run a business.

We looked at twelve of the most popular support tools on the market. Only eight of them offer any kind of free tier. Four of those tools, including Zendesk and Intercom, do not have a free option at all. Of the eight that do offer a free plan, seven of them put a cap on your growth.

For example, Crisp and Freshdesk limit their free plans to two seats. If you have a third person join your team, you have to start paying. HubSpot and Chatwoot also cap you at two users. Even the more generous options like Help Scout stop at five users. LastWorker does not have a seat limit. You can have two people answering chats or twenty.

We also do not cap your conversations. Some tools, like Tidio, give you fifty conversations a month. After that, the widget simply stops working until your next billing cycle. That is a dangerous way to run a service business. If your marketing works and you get a spike in traffic, you do not want your communication tools to shut down.

Is there a catch with the branding?

Many free tools put a large logo at the bottom of the chat widget. If you want to remove it, you have to pay. Tawk.to is one example of this. Their software is free, but they charge you a monthly fee to remove the "powered by" badge.

We do not do that. You get a clean, professional chat widget for your site without a hidden fee to hide our logo. I know how important branding is for a local business. You want your customers to see your name, not the name of your software provider.

How do you manage the messages?

When a customer sends a message through the chat on your site, it goes into a shared inbox. I have used shared inboxes in dental offices and restaurants for years. The benefit is that everyone on the team can see what is happening.

If a receptionist is on the phone, another team member can see the incoming chat and answer it. You do not have to share a single login or pass a phone around. Because we do not charge for seats, everyone on your team can have their own login.

The shared inbox also handles email. If someone emails your support address, it shows up in the same place as your live chats. This keeps everything organized. You are not jumping between a Gmail tab and a chat dashboard.

The inbox includes a few other tools that are usually paid extras in other software. You get a contact database to see your history with each customer. You get a ticketing system to track issues that take longer to solve. You also get a knowledge base where you can write articles for your customers to read. All of this is free.

Why is it free?

I understand being skeptical about free software. I have been on the other side of the sales pitch many times. Most companies use a free tier to get you in the door and then force you into a twenty dollar per month subscription as soon as you need a basic feature.

Our model is different. We do not charge a subscription or a per-seat fee. We make money when you use our automated services.

If you want to answer every chat yourself, you can do that forever for zero dollars. If you decide you want the AI to help, we charge for that. An AI reply on chat or email costs four cents. It only costs that when it actually generates a response.

We also offer phone services. You can get a phone number for one dollar a month. If you want the AI to answer a phone call, it costs ten cents per minute. Inbound text messages are free. Outbound texts cost three cents per segment.

This approach lets you start for free and only pay when the software is doing actual work that saves you time. It is the kind of deal I wish I had when I was managing eleven front desks.

Does the AI start talking to customers automatically?

No. This is an important point for anyone who has ever had a "smart" system go haywire. At LastWorker, AI is off by default.

When you install the live chat, it is a manual channel. Nothing is generated by a computer. Nothing is charged to your account. A human from your team must answer the messages.

I have seen businesses get burned by tools that "auto-suggest" replies or try to be helpful and end up annoying the customer. We believe you should be in control of when and how you use automation. You have to go into the settings and turn the AI on if you want it to help. Until then, it is just a solid, free tool for your team to talk to customers.

How does this compare to other free plans?

Most free tiers in this industry are designed to be outgrown. They give you a taste of the tool but hide the useful features behind a paywall.

Out of the twelve tools we track, Zoho Desk is one that limits its free plan to email ticketing only. They do not give you live chat at all on the free version. Help Scout is generous with seats but limits you to one inbox and one docs site.

LastWorker gives you the whole suite. You get the chat, the email inbox, the knowledge base, and the saved replies. We do not hold back features like reporting or routing to force you into a paid plan.

I have been the person who had to tell a business owner we needed to spend an extra two hundred dollars a month because we hired one more person and hit a seat limit. It is an annoying conversation to have. By removing the seat limit and the conversation cap, we remove that friction.

Using live chat to stop losing leads

The biggest mistake I see service businesses make is ignoring their website traffic. You might spend thousands of dollars on Google Ads or local SEO to get people to your site. If they get there and see a static page with a "Contact Us" form, they might fill it out. But they probably won't.

People have high expectations now. If they are looking for a dentist or a contractor, they are often in a hurry. They want to know if you are open, if you take their insurance, or if you can come out for an estimate on Tuesday.

A live chat widget allows you to answer those questions in seconds. Even if you are busy, having the widget there shows that you are a modern, responsive business. It is a far better experience than a contact form that goes into a black hole.

I used to carry a pager, then a BlackBerry, then an iPhone, all to make sure I was available for the business. A shared inbox with live chat means the weight of that responsiveness is spread across the whole team. It makes the work sustainable.

Final thoughts on the setup

If you are running a small team, start with the free live chat. Paste the script tag into your site and see how your customers react. You will likely find that people who would have never called your office are happy to send a quick chat message.

You can add your whole team without worrying about the bill. You can handle as many chats as your traffic allows. If you ever get to the point where you are too busy to answer them all, the AI options are there, but you do not have to use them.

I have spent my career looking for ways to make service businesses run smoother. Simple, free communication tools are the foundation of that. You do not need a complex, expensive suite of software to talk to your customers. You just need a way to be there when they have a question.
