The short version

  • Directly editing footer.php is the fastest way to install but theme updates will erase your code.
  • Using a header and footer plugin is the safest way to ensure your chat widget stays active.
  • Eight out of twelve major support tools offer a free tier but most limit you to two seats.
  • LastWorker chat and email are free forever with no limits on teammates or conversation history.

To add free live chat to WordPress, copy your script snippet and paste it immediately before the closing body tag in your theme's footer.php file. You can access this via the Theme File Editor under the Appearance menu. Alternatively, use a plugin like Insert Headers and Footers to safely paste the code into the Footer section and save.

How do I install the chat script manually?

If you want to get the widget running without installing extra plugins, you can do it through the WordPress admin dashboard. I have done this for dozens of local business sites because it is fast.

First, log in to your WordPress admin area. Go to the menu on the left and click Appearance, then click Theme File Editor. In some older versions of WordPress, this is simply called Editor.

Once the editor opens, look at the list of files on the right side of the screen. Look for the file labeled Theme Footer or footer.php. Click it to open the code.

Scroll down to the bottom of the code. You are looking for a specific tag that looks like this: </body>. This is the closing tag for the main content of your site.

Paste your LastWorker script on the line immediately before that tag. Your script looks like this:

<script src="https://lastworker.com/widget.js" data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>

Click the Update File button at the bottom of the page. Your live chat widget is now active. If you refresh your website, you should see the chat icon in the corner.

Why is direct theme editing risky?

I need to be honest with you about a problem I have run into many times. When you edit footer.php directly, you are modifying the core files of your current theme.

When your theme developer releases an update to fix a bug or add a feature, WordPress replaces your edited files with new ones. Your chat script will be wiped out. I have seen business owners lose days of leads because they did not realize their chat widget disappeared after an automatic theme update.

If you use a child theme, this is less of a problem. If you do not know what a child theme is, you are likely using a parent theme. In that case, you should use the plugin method instead.

How do I install live chat using a plugin?

Using a plugin is the professional way to do this. It keeps your code separate from your theme. If you change your theme entirely next year, your chat widget will still work.

Go to Plugins in your WordPress menu and click Add New. Search for a plugin called Insert Headers and Footers. Install and activate it.

Once activated, go to Settings and click on the Insert Headers and Footers menu item. You will see three boxes: Header, Body, and Footer.

Paste your script into the box labeled Scripts in Footer. Scroll down and click Save. This method is safer because the script is stored in your WordPress database, not in the theme files. It will survive any update.

What should I expect from a free chat tool?

I have managed operations for a regional dental practice with eleven front desks. I know that "free" usually comes with a catch.

In the market of twelve major support tools we track, eight of them offer some kind of free tier. However, most of them are designed to force you into a paid plan quickly.

HubSpot and Freshdesk both limit their free tiers to 2 users. If you have a small office with a manager and two receptionists, someone is getting left out. Tidio limits you to 50 conversations per month. In a busy service business, you can hit 50 conversations in the first week. Once you hit that limit, the widget simply stops working until your next billing cycle.

Zoho Desk has a free edition for 3 users, but it does not include live chat at all. It only covers email ticketing. Crisp offers a free tier for 2 seats, but it locks your chat history and does not include an email inbox.

Tawk.to is the only other tool on our list that offers unlimited seats and history for free, but they put a "powered by tawk.to" badge on your site. You have to pay to remove it.

At LastWorker, we decided to do it differently. Live chat and email support are free forever. This includes unlimited conversations, unlimited teammates, and no credit card. We also include a shared inbox, contacts, tickets, and a public help center in that free tier.

How does the pricing work if chat is free?

I have watched good leads die in a voicemail box because the business could not afford to staff the phones 24/7. That is where our paid features come in.

We do not have a subscription fee or a per-seat fee. I have worked with shops where we paid $25 per user per month just to let our team answer emails. If you have ten employees, that is $3,000 a year before you even send your first message.

With LastWorker, you only pay for what you actually use. Our AI is off by default. Every channel you add starts as a manual channel where a human answers. We do not charge you for those human conversations.

If you choose to turn on an AI reply for chat, email, or SMS, it costs $0.04 only when it actually generates a response. If you want the AI to answer a phone call, it costs $0.01 per minute. This includes the carrier costs. A phone number costs $1 per month. Outbound SMS costs $0.03 per segment, while inbound SMS is free.

This model allows a small business to have the same tools as a large corporation without the $50 per agent monthly bill that companies like Zendesk or Intercom charge.

Should I let AI answer my WordPress chat?

In my eighteen years of running service businesses, I have learned that customers care more about getting an answer than who gives it to them. But the answer has to be right.

I have written phone scripts at 2am trying to make sure my receptionists knew exactly what to say about our pricing and services. If you turn on AI for your WordPress chat, you are essentially giving that script to a machine.

The benefit of the $0.04 AI reply is that it works at 3am when you are asleep. It uses the knowledge base you build in our free tool. If you have not written a knowledge base yet, keep the AI off. A human should always be the first line of defense until the instructions are clear.

How do I manage multiple locations?

When I ran a two-location restaurant group, keeping the communication separate was a nightmare. Most tools want you to pay for a separate "site" or "organization" for every location.

Because LastWorker does not charge per seat, you can add your entire team from every location to one shared inbox. You can see which leads are coming from your WordPress site and which are coming from phone calls.

If you have different WordPress sites for different locations, you just use a different script for each one. All the messages land in the same place for your team to handle.

What are the most common mistakes in setting up chat?

The biggest mistake I see is not checking the mobile view. WordPress themes often move things around on smaller screens. After you paste your script and save it, open your website on your phone. Make sure the chat bubble does not cover up your "Book Now" button or your phone number.

The second mistake is ignoring the notification settings. A live chat widget is only useful if someone knows a customer is talking. Since LastWorker provides a shared inbox for free, make sure your team has the inbox open or has email alerts turned on.

I have seen businesses install chat and then ignore it for three days. A customer who starts a chat expects a response much faster than they do with an email. If you cannot answer quickly, that is when the $0.04 AI reply becomes a useful investment to keep the lead warm until you can get to it.

Is this better than a contact form?

I have worked with dental practices where the contact form was the only way to reach us after hours. We would walk in on Monday morning to twenty emails. By the time we called them back at 10am, half of them had already booked with a competitor who answered the phone on Sunday.

A live chat widget on your WordPress site changes the math. It allows a customer to get an immediate answer to a basic question, like "Do you take my insurance?" or "Are you open today?".

By providing a free live chat tool that does not limit your conversations, we want to help you capture those leads before they bounce back to Google to find someone else. You can start with the free manual chat and only move to the paid AI features when you see the volume is high enough to justify the cost.

How do I get started?

You do not need a credit card to start. You can sign up, get your script, and follow the steps above to put it on your WordPress site.

Once the script is in your footer.php or your header and footer plugin, the widget will appear. You can then invite your team. Since there is no per-seat fee, you can invite your front desk staff, your managers, and your sales team without worrying about the bill.

If you decide you want to try the AI or add a phone number later, you can add a balance to your account. Until then, the chat, email, and ticketing tools stay free. I have spent my career looking for ways to cut overhead without cutting quality. This is the simplest way to do it for a WordPress site.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I paste the live chat script in WordPress?

The script goes in your theme's footer.php file, specifically on the line immediately before the closing </body> tag. This ensures the widget loads without slowing down your initial page content.

Will a theme update delete my live chat widget?

Yes, if you edit your theme files directly. When the theme updates, it replaces footer.php with a fresh version. Using a plugin like Insert Headers and Footers prevents this by keeping the script in your database.

Does LastWorker charge for chat conversations?

Live chat and email support are free forever for unlimited conversations and teammates. You only pay $0.04 if you choose to have the AI generate a reply, or for phone and SMS usage.

Stop letting customers go to voicemail.

Set up in about fifteen minutes. Live chat and email are free forever, so there is no bill to weigh up before you try it.
