The short version

  • To install the widget, use a Custom HTML tag in GTM and set it to fire on All Pages.
  • You must publish the GTM container after saving your tag or the widget will not appear to visitors.
  • LastWorker chat and email are free for unlimited users, unlike many competitors that charge per seat.
  • AI features are off by default, ensuring no unexpected charges for automated replies.

To add LastWorker live chat to Google Tag Manager, create a new Custom HTML tag, paste your widget script, and set the trigger to fire on All Pages. After saving the tag, you must click Submit and then Publish to make the widget go live. This method puts the chat box on your site without requiring a developer to edit your code.

How do I set up the tag in Google Tag Manager?

If you have your Google Tag Manager dashboard open, the process takes less than five minutes. I have done this for dental offices where the website was managed by an agency that charged a hundred dollars for every small change. Using a tag manager means you do not have to wait for them.

First, click on the Tags section in the left hand sidebar and select New. Give your tag a name like LastWorker Live Chat. Click on the Tag Configuration box and choose the Custom HTML option from the list.

You will need to paste your specific script into the HTML box. The script looks like this:

<script src="https://lastworker.com/widget.js" data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>

Replace the agent ID placeholder with your actual ID from your LastWorker settings. Once the code is in the box, scroll down to the Triggering section. Click the circle and select All Pages from the list. This ensures the chat widget follows your customers whether they are on your homepage or a specific service page. Click Save.

What is the common mistake people make during installation?

The biggest gotcha in Google Tag Manager is the difference between saving a tag and publishing it. I have seen many business owners get frustrated because they followed the steps but the widget stayed invisible.

When you click Save, GTM stores your work as a draft. It creates a new version of your container, but it does not send that version to your live website. To fix this, you must look at the top right corner of your screen. Click the blue Submit button. You will be asked to name the version: you can call it Added Chat Widget. Then, click the Publish button.

Only after you see the summary screen showing the container is live will the script actually load on your site. If you visit your website and do not see the chat box, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache.

Why use a tag manager instead of direct code?

In the two restaurant locations I managed, our website was built on a platform that was difficult to navigate. Every time I wanted to add a tracking pixel or a support tool, I felt like I was going to break the entire layout.

Google Tag Manager acts as a container. It is a single piece of code you put on your site once. After that, you can add tools like LastWorker through the GTM interface. It is cleaner and safer for people who are running the business rather than coding it.

Another benefit is speed. The script tag I provided above includes an async attribute. This is important. It means the browser does not stop loading your images or text to wait for the chat widget. If the chat script takes an extra half second to load, your visitor still sees your phone number and your menu immediately.

How does the cost of this tool compare to others?

When I ran a regional dental practice with eleven front desks, the cost of software was a constant headache. Many companies charge you for every person who logs in to answer a chat.

I looked at the market data for twelve common support tools. Four of them, including Zendesk and Intercom, do not offer a free tier at all. Their entry prices start between $19 and $29 per seat every month. If I wanted all eleven of my front desk staff to have access to the inbox, I would be looking at a bill of over $300 a month just to answer questions.

Even the tools that have free plans usually limit you. Crisp and Chatwoot both limit their free plans to 2 seats. If you have a third person join the team, you have to move to a paid plan. LastWorker does not do this. Live chat and email support are free forever. You get unlimited conversations and unlimited teammates. You do not even have to put a credit card on file to get the widget running through your tag manager.

What happens after the widget is live?

Once you publish your tag, the chat widget will appear on your site. By default, nothing is automated. I prefer it this way. In the shops I worked with, we wanted a human to answer the phone or the chat first.

AI is off by default in LastWorker. New channels are manual. Nothing is generated by a computer unless you specifically turn that feature on. This prevents the situation where a bot gives a customer the wrong price for a root canal or a catering order.

If you do decide to use the AI to help answer chats when your team is busy, the cost is clear. Each AI reply costs $0.04. It only charges you when it actually generates a response. There is no monthly subscription fee or per seat fee to worry about.

Can I manage phone calls here too?

While you are setting up your digital channels, you might think about your phone lines. I spent years watching good leads die in a voicemail box because the front desk was busy with a patient.

LastWorker allows you to add a phone number for $1 a month. If you want an AI to answer the phone when you cannot, it costs $0.10 per minute. This includes the carrier costs. For a small business, this is often cheaper than hiring a full time receptionist or an expensive answering service.

The inbound SMS messages are free. If you need to send a text message out to a customer, it costs $0.03 per segment. This transparent pricing is different from the usual "starting at" prices I found in my research. Out of the twelve competitors I checked, most require a monthly subscription before you even get to the usage costs.

Is the help center included for free?

Yes. Along with the live chat widget you just installed, you get a public help center and a knowledge base. These are also free.

In my experience, about thirty percent of the questions my staff answered were the same three things: "Where are you located?", "What are your hours?", and "Do you take my insurance?". Putting these answers in a free help center reduces the number of chats you have to handle manually.

The shared inbox, contacts, and ticketing system are all part of the free package. You can manage your email support and your live chat in one place without paying for extra modules.

How do I know if it is working?

After you publish your GTM container, open your website in an incognito or private browser window. This ensures you are seeing what a new customer sees. The chat bubble should appear in the corner of the screen.

Send a test message. You should see that message arrive in your LastWorker shared inbox immediately. If it does not appear, go back to Google Tag Manager and check your agent ID. A single missing digit in the code will prevent the connection.

I have found that keeping the installation simple is the best way to ensure it actually gets done. You do not need a complex integration or a fancy plugin. A single Custom HTML tag in Google Tag Manager is all it takes to start talking to your customers.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the LastWorker script in Google Tag Manager?

The script belongs in a Custom HTML tag. You do not need to edit your website theme files or header templates directly.

Why is my live chat widget not showing up after I saved it in GTM?

The most common reason is failing to publish the container. You must click the Submit button and then the Publish button in the top right corner of your GTM dashboard.

Does adding live chat through GTM slow down my website?

The LastWorker script uses an async attribute. This tells the browser to keep loading your site content while the script fetches the widget in the background.

How much does it cost to use LastWorker through Google Tag Manager?

The live chat and email support tools are free. You only pay if you choose to use AI replies, which cost $0.04 each, or phone features.
