The short version

  • Paste your chat script into the Footer Miscellaneous HTML field in Magento Configuration.
  • You must flush the full page cache after saving or the widget will not appear.
  • Six out of the eight competitors with free tiers limit how many agents you can have.
  • LastWorker chat and email support are free forever with no agent or conversation limits.

To install free live chat on Magento, go to Content, then Design, then Configuration in your admin panel. Edit your store view, open the Footer section, and paste your script into the Miscellaneous HTML field. Save your changes and flush the Magento cache. This ensures the chat widget appears immediately for every visitor on your site.

How do I get the widget code into the Magento admin?

I have worked with Magento for a long time. It is a powerful system, but it can feel like a labyrinth when you just want to add one piece of code. I remember the first time I tried to help a restaurant group update their site. I spent forty minutes looking for a simple header file before I realized the admin panel had a specific place for this.

Log into your Magento admin dashboard. Look at the sidebar on the left and click on Content. Under the Design heading, click on Configuration. You will see a list of your store themes and views. Find the store view where you want the chat to appear and click Edit.

Once you are in the edit screen, look for a section labeled Footer. When you click to expand it, you will see a text area called Miscellaneous HTML. This is where you paste your code. Use this script:

<script src="https://lastworker.com/widget.js" data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>

After you paste the script, click the Save Configuration button at the top right of the screen. Your work in the configuration menu is done, but the widget is not live yet.

Why does the chat widget not show up after I save it?

The shops I worked with often ran into this exact problem. You click save, you refresh your homepage, and nothing happens. You start to think you broke the code or pasted it in the wrong box. In most cases, the code is fine. The problem is that Magento caches pages very aggressively to keep the site fast.

You must flush the cache. Go to System in the sidebar and then click on Cache Management. You will see a list of different cache types. I usually just select all of them and click the Submit button with the action set to Refresh. Specifically, the Page Cache is the one that prevents your new HTML from showing up.

Once you see the green success message at the top of the page, go back to your website and refresh. The chat widget should be sitting there in the corner. If you still do not see it, try opening your site in an incognito window. This bypasses your browser's local cache and shows you exactly what a new customer sees.

What is included in the free live chat for Magento?

I have hired receptionists and I have written phone scripts at 2am. I know the cost of managing a front desk. When I say a tool is free, I mean it does not have a hidden bill waiting for you when you actually start using it. Many software companies use a free plan as a trap to get you to install their code before telling you that you can only have two people answering messages.

LastWorker provides live chat and email support for free. There is no limit on the number of conversations you can have. You can have your whole team logged in at once because we do not charge for seats. The shared inbox, your contacts list, the ticketing system, and the knowledge base are all part of the free package. We do not even ask for a credit card to get started.

The AI features are off by default. This is important to me because I do not like surprises on my billing statement. If you want an AI to answer a chat, an email, or an SMS, it costs $0.04 only when it actually generates a response. If you want the AI to answer a phone call, it is $0.10 per minute. If you never turn those features on, you never pay for them.

How does this compare to other chat tools?

I looked at twelve of the most popular tools in the market to see how they treat small businesses. The results are frustrating for anyone trying to keep their overhead low. Out of those twelve tools, four do not even offer a free version. You have to pay $19 to $29 per month just to let a customer send you a message.

Of the eight tools that do offer a free tier, six of them limit you to a tiny number of agents. For example, Crisp and Freshdesk only allow two agents on their free plans. If you have a front desk team of three people, you are already forced into a paid plan. Zoho Desk gives you three users but they do not even include live chat on the free plan, only email ticketing.

Tidio offers a free plan, but they cut you off after 50 conversations in a month. If you run a busy Magento store, you could hit that limit in two days. Once you hit the limit, the widget simply disappears until your next billing cycle. I have watched good leads die in a voicemail box, and having a chat widget disappear is just as bad. It makes your business look like it went out of business in the middle of a Tuesday.

Should I use human agents or AI for my Magento store?

In the regional dental practice I managed, we had eleven front desks. We were busy. People called to confirm appointments, to ask about billing, or to see if we were open on Saturdays. A lot of these questions are repetitive. I used to think the only way to handle it was to hire more people, but that is expensive and leads to front desk burnout.

At LastWorker, everything is manual by default. A human answers every chat until you decide otherwise. If you find yourself typing the same answer ten times a day, you can use our saved replies. Those are free. They save you time without costing you money.

If you reach a point where you cannot keep up with the volume, you can choose to turn on the AI. Because we do not charge a subscription fee, you can use the AI for a few days during a holiday rush and then turn it off. You only pay the $0.04 per reply. This is a much better deal than paying $50 a month for an automation feature you might only use twice a week.

What are the costs for phone and SMS features?

Most Magento owners eventually realize that chat is only half the battle. People still want to call. I have spent years watching leads disappear because the phone was busy or the office was closed. LastWorker lets you add a phone number for $1 per month. There are no per-seat fees or expensive hardware to buy.

If you want the AI to handle your phone calls, it is $0.10 per minute. That price includes the carrier costs. If you want to send an outbound SMS, it is $0.03 per segment. Receiving a text message from a customer is free. These are predictable, concrete numbers.

I have seen businesses get hit with massive bills because they used a service that charged per lead or had a complicated credit system. We don't do that. You pay for what you use. If your phone does not ring and you do not send a text, your bill for those features is just the $1 for the phone number.

How do I manage multiple store locations?

When I handled a two-location restaurant group, the biggest headache was keeping everything separate. You do not want a customer at your downtown location asking about a reservation and having it answered by someone at the suburban branch who has no idea what is going on.

With LastWorker, you can manage everything from one shared inbox. You can see which store the customer is coming from and route the conversation to the right person. Since the seats are free, you can have every manager at every location logged in. You do not have to share passwords or worry about hitting a user cap.

The ticketing system and the public help center are also free. You can write your own articles to answer the questions you get every day. This keeps your team from spending three hours a day explaining your return policy or your shipping rates. You write it once, put it in the knowledge base, and it is available for your customers 24/7.

Is the setup process really this simple?

I know some guides make things sound easier than they are. They use words like "seamless" to hide the fact that you need a developer to make it work. I am not a developer. I am a guy who has spent eighteen years running operations. If I can't set it up in five minutes, I don't expect you to do it either.

The steps I listed for Magento are exactly how it works. Content, Design, Configuration, Footer. That is it. There are no complicated integrations to configure and no mobile apps you are required to download to get the widget to show up. You just paste the code and refresh your cache.

If you have a Magento site open in another tab right now, you can have this live before your next cup of coffee is cold. You do not need to talk to a salesperson or wait for an account to be approved. You sign up, get your code, and put it on your site. That is how software should work for a small business.

How do I know if this is the right tool for me?

I am not here to tell you that LastWorker is the only option. Tawk.to also offers a very generous free plan with unlimited agents and chat history. They have a badge on their widget that stays there unless you pay them to remove it. If you do not mind the branding, they are a solid choice.

The reason I believe in what we are building is the lack of a subscription. Every other tool on the list, from Help Scout to Zendesk, eventually wants you to pay a monthly fee per person. For a growing service business, that is a tax on your success. The more people you hire to help your customers, the more you have to pay the software company.

I prefer a model where the basic tools are free and you only pay for the high-value automation when you actually use it. It is an honest way to do business. It keeps our incentives aligned with yours. We only make money when we are actively saving you time by handling a call or a message for you. Until then, the tools are yours to use as much as you want.
