The short version

  • Installation requires a Squarespace Business plan or higher to access the Code Injection menu.
  • Paste the LastWorker script into the Footer box under Advanced settings to go live.
  • Live chat and email ticketing are free with no limits on agents or conversations.
  • AI features are off by default and only charge a fee if you choose to enable and use them.

You add live chat to Squarespace by going to Settings, then Advanced, then Code Injection, and pasting the LastWorker script into the Footer box. Click Save and the widget appears immediately on your website. This process requires a Squarespace Business plan or higher. The chat widget, email inbox, and help center are provided for free with no per-seat subscription fees.

How do I add the live chat code to Squarespace?

I have spent years setting up software for dental offices and restaurants. I know that if a technical task takes more than five minutes, it usually gets pushed to the next week and then forgotten. Installing this widget is a three step process that fits into a coffee break.

First, you need to open your Squarespace dashboard and navigate to the Settings menu. From there, scroll down to the bottom and click on Advanced. Inside the Advanced menu, you will see an option for Code Injection.

Second, look for the box labeled Footer. You might see other code there if you use tracking tools or other plugins. Simply scroll to the bottom of that box and paste your LastWorker script. The script looks like this:

<script src="https://lastworker.com/widget.js" data-agent-id="YOUR_AGENT_ID" async></script>

Third, click the Save button at the top of the screen. Your live chat widget is now active. You do not need to refresh your site or clear your cache to see it. It will appear on every page of your Squarespace site automatically.

Why is the Code Injection menu missing from my site?

This is the part that most guides ignore. I have worked with many small business owners who get frustrated because they cannot find the menus described in tutorials. If you do not see the Code Injection option under your Advanced settings, it is because of your Squarespace plan.

Squarespace restricts the ability to add custom scripts to their Business, Commerce, and Professional plans. If you are currently paying for the Personal plan, the Code Injection panel is not just locked: it is not there at all. You will need to upgrade your Squarespace subscription to access this feature.

I understand that an extra monthly cost to Squarespace is a hurdle. In my experience with regional dental practices, the cost of the higher website plan is usually offset by the first lead that doesn't get lost in a voicemail box. If you are on the Personal plan, you have to weigh that upgrade cost against the value of talking to your customers in real time.

How much does the chat widget cost to run?

In the shops I worked with, software costs were a constant headache. Most tools use a per-seat pricing model. If you have eleven front desks like my old dental practice, paying $19 or $25 per person every month adds up to hundreds of dollars before you even answer a single customer.

Out of the twelve major tools in the market, four of them do not offer any free tier at all. LiveChat, Front, Zendesk, and Intercom all require a paid subscription from day one. Others that do offer free versions often put tight caps on your growth. For example, Crisp limits their free tier to 2 seats and excludes the email inbox. Tidio allows for 10 seats but cuts off the widget entirely once you hit 50 conversations in a month.

LastWorker is different because the live chat and email support are free forever. There are no limits on how many conversations you have or how many teammates you add. You do not need a credit card to start. The shared inbox, contacts, tickets, knowledge base, and a public help center are all included in the free tier.

I have watched good leads die because a business hit a conversation limit on a "free" plan and didn't notice the widget had disappeared. We built this to avoid that. You get unlimited chat history and unlimited teammates without a subscription.

How does the AI work if it is turned off by default?

I have a healthy skepticism for automated tools. I have seen phone scripts I wrote at 2am perform better than expensive "smart" systems because a human was behind the words. At LastWorker, AI is OFF by default. When you install your widget on Squarespace, everything is manual. A human answers the messages, and nothing is generated by a machine unless you choose to turn it on.

If you do decide to use AI to help answer chats, emails, or SMS messages, we do not charge a flat monthly fee for it. You pay $0.04 only when the AI actually generates a reply. This is a far cry from tools like Tidio, which gives you 50 AI conversations and then stops until the next billing cycle.

The AI can also handle phone calls. If you get a phone number through us for $1 a month, the AI can answer calls for $0.01 per minute. This includes the carrier costs. For a small business owner who is currently missing calls while they are on the floor or in a patient room, this is a predictable way to manage costs without a heavy monthly commitment.

Can I use this for multiple front desks or locations?

When I managed a two-location restaurant group, I hated having to log into different accounts to see what was happening at each site. Because we do not charge per seat, you can add your entire staff to one shared inbox.

You can see every chat from your Squarespace site, every email, and every SMS in one place. If you have multiple people working the front desk, they can all see the incoming messages without you paying for extra licenses. This transparency was vital in the dental practices I ran. It meant that if one receptionist was busy with a patient, someone at another desk could see the chat and help the customer immediately.

Is there a catch with the free features?

I am not a brochure, so I will tell you plainly how the business works. We make money when you use the paid utility features, not by charging you for the right to talk to your customers.

The live chat, email ticketing, and knowledge base are free because they are the foundation of a service business. We charge for the phone numbers at $1 a month, outbound SMS at $0.03 per segment, and the AI usage I mentioned earlier. Inbound SMS is free.

This model allows a solo entrepreneur to start for zero dollars and only pay as they grow. I have seen too many businesses get stuck with a $300 monthly bill for a "pro" suite of tools they only use 20% of. With this setup, you have the same tools as a large enterprise without the overhead.

How do I handle messages when I am away from my desk?

One of the biggest fears business owners have about live chat is the pressure to be online 24/7. I have seen the burnout that comes from trying to answer every ping at dinner.

Because the knowledge base and help center are free, you can point customers to those resources when you are unavailable. If a message comes in while you are away, it stays in your shared inbox as a ticket. You can respond via email or chat as soon as you are back. You are not tethered to the Squarespace dashboard: you manage everything through the LastWorker inbox.

If you find that you are missing too many opportunities, that is when the $0.04 AI replies or the $0.01 per minute AI phone answering becomes a practical choice. It acts as a safety net for those times when you simply cannot get to the phone or the computer.

Final steps for your Squarespace site

Once you have saved the code in your Footer box, I recommend opening your website on a mobile device. Most of your customers will find you that way. Check how the widget looks and send a test message to yourself.

You will see that message appear in your LastWorker inbox instantly. From there, you can set up your saved replies for common questions. These are also free and help you respond to frequent inquiries in seconds. I used to spend hours training staff on how to answer the same four questions about parking and insurance. Putting those into saved replies or the free knowledge base saves everyone time.

If you have your Squarespace site open right now, follow those three steps: Settings, Advanced, Code Injection. Paste the script and save. You will have a professional support system running before you finish your next task.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I find the Code Injection menu in Squarespace?

You find it by navigating to Settings, then selecting Advanced, and then clicking on Code Injection. This is where you will see the Footer box for your script.

Why can I not see the Code Injection option on my Squarespace site?

This is the most common hurdle. Squarespace limits Code Injection to their Business and Commerce plans. If you are on a Personal plan, that menu option will be completely hidden from your dashboard.

Does adding live chat to Squarespace cost extra per month?

LastWorker does not charge a monthly subscription or per-seat fee for live chat. The widget and the shared inbox are free forever. You only pay if you choose to use paid features like AI replies or a dedicated phone number.

He has hired receptionists, written phone scripts at 2 a.m., and watched good leads die in a voicemail box. Stop letting customers go to voicemail.
